The Intercontinental Madrid is located in an affluent end of town, on the Paseo de la Castellana at the northern edge of the Salamanca fashion district. While not directly in Madrid’s city centre, the “Golden Mile” with its grand boulevards full of designer boutiques and restaurants is quite lovely, and there are several superb museums nearby. Meanwhile, you’re only a five-minute walk away from the metro when you need to mobilise.

The former palace became a hotel in the 1950s, and the architect who undertook the renovation was clever enough to retain the original palatial opulence with the use of grandiose chandeliers, gold leaf accents, fireplaces and inlaid wooden furniture. The original heavily-veined Alicante red marble pillars and floors in the lobby still gleam, and the sweeping Tara-esque stairway is beautifully carpeted in royal blue. There are some Art Deco features here and there, and the public-area furnishings are elegant and plush. The welcoming atmosphere will envelop you from the moment you walk in the door.

Select a room or suite from the 302 on offer; some have balconies, and all are classically decorated in royal-looking gold, beige and either blue or red. Beds are big and comfortable, and each room features an eighteenth-century-style desk and chairs. Coffee and tea facilities are provided, along with shaving kits and beautifully packaged toiletries. Bathrooms are large with towel warmers and cosy robes; upgrade to a higher category if you want a separate shower and tub. Make your stay even more enjoyable by upgrading to a premium room with a balcony or to the Intercontinental Club level. The benefits you’ll get always pay off unless you plan to spend little time in the hotel.

Doing so would be a shame, however, as there’s lots to enjoy right here. Le Jardin restaurant, designed to look like a 20th-century conservatory, is one of the best restaurants in town, and Bar 49 is a great place to enjoy a creative cocktail or a Rioja and tapas, perhaps, along with a Cuban cigar. The breakfast buffet served every morning ‘till late is overwhelming and not to be missed. The feast includes sugar-coated churros and local Spanish jams along with fluffy eggs, meats, cheeses and pastries. Indulge, and then hit the gym; it’s well-appointed and open 24-hours. There’s a small spa, too, and a playroom for kids.
