"Tucked into the foothills of the mountains, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel offers chic Andean accommodations and regional cuisine in a location that’s perfectly placed for exploring the region’s attractions."

Machu Picchu is Peru’s most visited site, and it’s easy to see why. The 15th-century citadel is the most famous relic of the Incan empire and is set high in the picturesque Andes mountains. The remains themselves are incredible (hence its popularity with visitors), and the surrounding postcard-worthy landscape is to die for. The closest town to Machu Picchu is the Pueblo, formerly Aguas Calientes, and in it is Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel – a lovely getaway that’s perfectly placed for those looking to explore the region’s natural beauty.

Tucked into the foothills of the mountains, the hotel resembles an Old World village with its cobblestone paths and adobe buildings. Inside these buildings are the guestrooms, all decorated in an Andean style that is simultaneously authentic and chic. Whitewashed walls contrast against dark wood furnishings and exposed beams, while splashes of colour from geometric-patterned throw blankets liven up the space. Inside these buildings are the guestrooms, all decorated in an Andean style that is simultaneously authentic and chic. Whitewashed walls contrast against dark wood furnishings and exposed beams, while splashes of colour from geometric-patterned throw blankets liven up the space. Spacious bathrooms are made of marble, and some rooms have outdoor tubs as well. In the Villa rooms (the most luxe option), rooms have cosy wood-burning fireplaces.

Breakfast begins at 5:00 AM – a big plus for those looking to get an early start to their mountain adventures. The first meal of the day (and all others) can be had in a glass-walled dining room with an incomparable view of the mountains and Vilcanota River. Also gazing out at the river is Café Inkaterra, which is perched cheerily next to the train tracks in a thatched-roof hut. The handiwork of local artisans can be found within, and the cuisine is also regionally inspired (if you’ve ever wanted to try alpaca meat, you’re in luck).

It goes without saying that a visit to Machu Picchu is an absolute necessity, but once you’ve done that there are quite a few other things to see and do. Visit the area’s open-air market, seal your own tea bags in the Tea House, or visit the native farm that’s only a 30-minute walk away. The hotel will lead you on birdwatching walks or along the Orchid trail – both fantastic options for children who aren’t old enough to make the trek up to Machu Picchu.

A trip to the spa may be in order after a day spent exploring the mountains – relax in the eucalyptus-performed Andean sauna or take a dip in the hotel’s small pool. Of course, a number of facials and massages are offered as well – the Foot Therapy option is particularly appreciated after a challenging hike.
