A glamorous façade and the best location in town make Hotel Schweizerhof an obvious choice for an upscale stay when visiting Bern, but it’s what's behind the building’s pretty face that makes this hotel so spectacular. Within, 99 rooms and suites are the epitome of stylish sophistication, views are pulled from postcards, a killer spa is an oasis of tranquillity and the restaurant boasts some of the best food in town.

Though the hotel has been standing since 1857, the overall feel is decidedly modern with only the best of vintage accents shining through. Handsome rooms are a departure from conventional Swiss design, instead favouring an English-meets-French appeal that showcases parquet flooring, intricately patterned wallpaper and a visually pleasing palette of crisp ivory, glossy black and deep charcoal punctuated here and there by pops of brilliant scarlet. Bathrooms are chic and artsy, and rooms once again dodge tradition by coming equipped with Nespresso machines – a much-appreciated mod con that is rather rare in hotels throughout Switzerland. Do note that not all rooms have outdoor spaces, though if you’re lucky you’ll be able to snag one with a Juliet balcony.

The culinary offerings alone are worth a stay at Hotel Schweizerhof Bern. Jack’s Brasserie is the heart and soul of the place and is sure to delight every palate. The menu features everything from vegan grape risotto to gratinated beef bone marrow – not to mention the Wiener Schnitzel which has been named the best in Switzerland not once but three times. For an early evening drink, head up to the rooftop Sky Terrace, and prepare to have your breath taken away by the stunning views of the city and mountains. Though the glamorous rooftop closes fairly early, the Lobby Lounge Bar and neighbouring Cigar Lounge are open late – pop by for a cosy nightcap or for the popular afternoon tea.

Good spas are in short supply in Switzerland’s capital city, which makes it all the more gratifying to know that one of Bern’s best is in the hotel itself. A fitness centre is open 24 hours, but the real treats are the areas designed for pampering. Unwind with a massage or facial, and then head to ‘The Wet Zone’, where you’ll find pools, hammams, saunas and everything else you could possibly need to unwind.
