Built in 1909 during the Belle Epoque period, Hotel Royal was dedicated to King Edward VII. The King was intended to be one of the very first guests but, sadly, never made it before his death in 1910. Yet the title ‘Royal’ remained. Fitting the concept of ‘palace hotel’ – grand, excellent location and lavish decor, including frescoes by Gustave Jaulmes – it truly is fit for a king. The regal ambience remains strong and the French grandeur is exquisite. Rooms and suites are classic and comfortable and, of course, a room with a lake view is a must. If you like to play golf, the 18-hole Evian Resort Golf Club is world-famous and takes players on a journey of challenges with views of the lake and mountains; one of the most beautiful in Europe. If you want to improve your swing, the Academy offers all kinds of facilities and trainers to help you on your way.
And when it comes to dining, there’s a good choice of restaurants across the Evian Resort, including three gastronomic venues and five bars. Hotel Royal’s one Michelin starred Les Fresques dining room offers breathtaking views of Lake Geneva and a number of ‘collection dishes’, including crayfish from the lake served on foie gras, perfect with an expertly paired bottle from the wine cellar.
Children, as well as pets (for a fee) are welcome here. There’s a kids’ club, a teen club, a boutique and a ski shop too. At the end of a summer’s day, a cocktail on the terrace overlooking the lake and surrounded by mountains is one moment you’re not likely to forget for a very long time.
