The hotel owes much of its stylish appeal to its trendy East-meets-West design. Influences are equally apparent from the likes of both Japan and Brooklyn; the result is a space that’s at once strikingly contemporary, soothingly Zen and undeniably cool, all with just a touch of vintage flair.
Impressively, all of the hotel's 225 rooms feel amply spacious (in a city like San Francisco, this is particularly noteworthy). Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with natural light, illuminating the calming colour palette of white, grey and wood, making the spaces feel even larger. Clean lines and minimalist furniture keep the rooms feeling elegantly zen, while vibrant artwork adds a splash of personality. Modcons are plentiful, including everything from accoutrements for tea and coffee to snazzy smart TVs – some accommodations have balconies as well. Be warned, however, that while bathrooms have fabulously large walk-in showers, they do not have tubs.
The surrounding neighbourhood is practically overflowing with fabulous eateries, but you’ll also have several solid options within the hotel itself. A fresh and healthy breakfast buffet is laid out each morning on the pretty garden level, and the food served there highlights the bounty of small local farms. On the lobby level, you’ll find the hotel’s bar which boasts an impressive array of Japanese whiskeys and sakes in addition to the expected cocktails and beer. Nari – the hotel‘s seafood-focused Thai restaurant – is an absolute delight: the dining room is beautiful, and the food is equally so thanks to the culinary artistry of chef Pim Techamuanvivit.
