A proud and pretty building with a pastel-yellow façade, Hotel El Convento traces its legacy back to 1646 (the year it was built) and holds numerous accolades: among them, it bears the distinction of being the oldest member of the Historic Hotels of America.

San Juan itself is an enchanting blend of old and new. Known for its cobblestone streets, sixteenth-century landmarks and Spanish Colonial architecture, it is also a hub of culture and glamour with a buzzy nightlife scene. Behind its pretty exteriors are just 58 guestrooms, all of which share a similar feel of timeless elegance. Andalusian tile floors coupled with exposed mahogany beams, handcrafted furniture and ornate accents lend a distinct sense of place to the spaces, which begin with the entry-level Deluxe Rooms and span numerous tiers of luxury, with the Gloria Vanderbilt Suite at the pinnacle of the lot. As the crème-de-la-crème of the hotel’s accommodations, the Gloria Vanderbilt Suite features a heightened sense of grandeur: expect black-and-white chequered marble floors, Trompe-l’œil walls and a spectacular bathroom – jacuzzi included. Notably, all accommodations feature either a Juliet balcony or a terrace from which to soak in the warm air and beautiful views.

Santísimo Restaurant is the hotel’s primary eatery. Set within El Convento’s pretty courtyard, this charming spot is open for all meals of the day and features the fabulous contemporary Puerto Rican cuisine of chef Antonio Pérez. Unpretentious and fun, this restaurant is a spirited place to dine at any time of day. Another option is El Patio del Níspero, which is open for breakfast from Wednesday through Sunday. Wicker chairs and potted plants adorn this covered patio area, and the breakfast served here is fresh, simple and fortifying. For a drink or two in the day’s later hours, pay a visit to Alegría Patio Bar. Laid-back and lovely, this is the perfect spot to soak in the sun and the scenery with a cocktail in hand.
