"Set on ten acres of lush gardens in the affluent suburb of Karen, the boutique Hemingway’s Nairobi boasts butler-serviced suites, unforgettable views and a restaurant with Kenya’s only Josper oven."
Situated within close proximity of the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust which looks after and hand-rears orphaned elephants and rhinos, there’s a lot here you shouldn’t miss. Here on the ten acres of beautiful gardens and greenery is a large pool, a spa, a steam room and a small well-equipped gym – nice diversions, especially after (or before) an action-packed safari. It’s an opportunity to enjoy modern-day Nairobi, although somewhat out of the city itself (a good thing), as you’ll miss out on the traffic and noise. You may choose to avoid it altogether and instead mosey down to the Mbagathi River at one end of the grounds for an evening stroll – alone or with a sneaky cocktail from the bar as company.
Outdoor dining options – with almost always near-perfect climes and views of the Ngong Hills – are pretty special. The informal restaurant, The Brasserie, serves nice meals of a continental variety. The Josper oven here is the only one in Kenya; a steak prepared this way is pretty fabulous. Breakfast is delicious, as is afternoon tea that’s served on the terrace. Hemingways bar is a handsome spot for an after-dinner drink, and The Wine cellar is worth a visit as well.
The property’s 45 suites all come with butler service, and many are named after famous people and places – think ‘The Hemingway Suite’ or ‘Blixen Suite’ – which is a great way to ensure that guests will never forget their room number. Each has a balcony that overlooks the gardens, and all have high-vaulted beamed ceilings with tranquil, safari-esque style decorations including tartan rugs and motorised TVs that emerge from vintage-style trunks.
Children are welcome, but other than the pool, there’s not much for them to do here, really. However, at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, there’s a lot for the young crowd, including the chance to stay in touch forever by fostering a baby elephant.
