Admittedly, the Grand Hyatt Mumbai is an airport hotel, but you’d never know it as, once inside, you won’t hear any air traffic noise. The facilities, cuisine and service blow all “airport hotel” cliches and expectations out of the water. For those who don’t know the city, you’ll be about an hour’s drive from Nariman Point, Colaba and the Gateway to India, the southernmost area of the city where most of the attractions are to be found. If, however, you have no reason to be in that vicinity, then a stay here promises to be something special, and you’ll be in or out of either the domestic or international airport in no time.

The rooms and suites, all 548, are spacious, elegant and handsomely appointed, designed with guests’ every comfort in mind. Expect tea and coffee making facilities, plenty of complimentary bottled water, fast WiFi, ultra-comfortable beds, desks and modern furnishings. Headboards and cupboards all have wooden facades, and pops of red and orange in the form of cushions and throws add a hint of the cacophony of colour that awaits on the streets of Mumbai, and all of India for that matter, where women from every walk of life wear vibrant clothes from the entire colour spectrum.

The hotel is a destination for dining, attracting a local, well-heeled crowd who are always eager for a good night out paired with fabulous cocktails and great food. Start the evening in the China House Lounge, where you’ll have your choice of killer prohibition-era cocktails along with the playlist of the evening. Have a bite here (Peking duck anyone?), or move on to the China House Restaurant for a more formal dining setting. There are three other formal restaurants, an Italian, an Indian and one called Fifty Five East whose offerings are a medley of Thai, Lebanese, Indian, Japanese and western flavours. You won’t go hungry here, for sure, and there’s also a gourmet, perfect for a delicious nibble on the go.

If you’re not too jet-lagged, or maybe if you are, there’s a fantastic fitness centre that’s open ‘round the clock, two outdoor pools with daily yoga classes offered, a spa and a superb hairdresser servicing both men and women. Make an appointment through the concierge before you arrive; it’s so popular with Mumbai residents that you’ll be hard-pressed to get a spot on the agenda. Transfers to and from the airport are complimentary.
