Engadin Valley is a household name in the winter sports community and a must on every skier's bucket list. A veritable alpine paradise, the valley has fostered a luxury resort scene over the past century and a half. Engadin is especially famous for St. Moritz, one of Switzerland’s best-known ski towns and a posh getaway destination that has twice hosted the Winter Olympics. Set in a stunning 1864 building at the foot of a cable car leading up to the slopes, the hotel is an iconic destination offering easy mountain access, elegant dining options and a killer spa.

Within, 224 rooms and suites strive for Old World elegance but admittedly come across as feeling just the slightest bit dated (though one could argue that what they lack in charm they make up for in mountain views). Some rooms can feel a smidge on the smaller side unless you’re travelling alone, while suites are exponentially more comfortable. If you’re willing to shell out extra for the Tower Suites it’s well worth it: these accommodations have the most dazzling views. For more room to make yourself at home, reserve one of the Alpine Villas, which come with one to five bedrooms, a dining area for eight and a convenient kitchen.

Begin your day with breakfast at the Grand Restaurant Les Saisons, and return later if you’re in the mood for a superb steak. The sublime Mediterranean cuisine at Cà d’Oro is absolutely worth booking a table for if you’re there in high season, as it (unfortunately) is only open in the winter months. Ristorante Da Adriano serves Italian cuisine on checkered tablecloths beneath an ornate Victorian ceiling and boasts a nice wine selection. For a post-ski prandial drink or afternoon tea, the Kempinski Bar & Lobby has a warm and trendy ambience to go with its classic cocktails and tasty assortment of Swiss pastries.

No trip to the hotel would be complete without a visit (or several) to the palatial spa. Spanning 2,800 square metres, the place is a heavenly temple to all things rejuvenation.
