"With 49 accommodations, several elegant dining venues, bars and a huge pool in the heart of the city, the Governor’s Residence is a true sanctuary in a chaotic, and often overwhelming, metropolis."

Yangon has many tourist attractions and yet the Governor’s Residence should be right up there on the top of the list, it’s that beautiful. With 49 rooms and suites and several elegant dining venues (and bars) situated in the diplomatic district, it’s a true sanctuary in a chaotic, and often overwhelming, metropolis. It’s hard to believe that the most famous sight in Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda, is a mere five-minute drive away.

Set in verdant gardens with dreamy lotus pools, teak walkways and a vast, outdoor, fan-shaped pool that surrounds the elegant, teak main building (there are adjacent structures that house the rooms), the hotel’s building dates back to the 1920s. Stay here, and embrace the aura of peacefulness and colonial-era romance that this beautiful property, housed in a city where peace and romance are often lacking in modern times, brings to its guests.

Choosing a room is simple, and while you may be tempted to go for a suite, the basic rooms are very large at 40 sq m/...   Show more

Choosing a room is simple, and while you may be tempted to go for a suite, the basic rooms are very large at 40 sq m/ 420 sq ft. Opt for a garden-view room, and choose from a double or a king-size bedded option. Beds are comfortable and rooms all have seating areas, a desk, free WiFi and big bathrooms. Importantly in a very humid place, the air-conditioning and overhead fans work well, enabling guests (unlike the original residents) to enjoy colonial, Burmese style living at an ambient temperature. Again, dark teak wood is prolifically used throughout the rooms, bathrooms and the hotel’s main building – rich-looking, exotic and polished till it gleams.

Expect to see peacocks wandering about as you dine on the restaurant’s terrace over an elaborate buffet and a la carte breakfast. Service is attentive, and the fresh juices are a revitalising treat. The restaurant is open for all meals, and while the food is not widely exciting, the chance to eat dinner in the exotic gardens, or indoors if you seek cooler climes, is very special. The Kipling Bar is a breezy, sophisticated venue that serves cool drinks and tea around the clock. Order a gin fizz, a throwback cocktail favoured by the British out here back in the day.

Be sure to visit the boutique on the premises which is full of gorgeous scarves, costume jewellery and other local trinkets that make wonderful souvenirs (for you, who else?). There’s also a small spa on the premises.
