The Four Seasons Resort Hoi An (The Nam Hai) has long maintained a reputation for being one of Vietnam’s finest digs – a reputation that has become all the more stellar since being acquired by the Four Seasons family in 2016. Palm trees tower above snow-white beaches; beyond, the South China Sea is almost impossibly blue. The all-villa resort’s perfectly manicured grounds are tended to by a small army of gardeners, ensuring that the tropical getaway always looks and feels like a blissfully idyllic paradise.

The inspiration for the resort’s spacious villas comes from Vietnamese garden homes (as reflected in the buildings’ pitched roofs and timber frames), an aesthetic that blends seamlessly with a hefty dose of contemporary luxury. Wispy gossamer netting surrounds raised sleeping platforms, and large living spaces are decorated in soothing tones. The element of phong thuy (Vietnamese feng shui) emphasizes each villa’s outdoor spaces, which are furnished with comfy loungers from which you can bask in the fresh air. Most villas have views of the water, but be sure to check first if scenic seascapes are a dealbreaker.

Dining at the resort is an absolute joy – and one that you can actively be a part of. A cooking academy runs every single day (there’s a junior academy for young chefs as well), and is a hands-on way for guests to learn the art of Vietnamese culinary tradition. Prepare your own meal there, or visit one of the resort’s two restaurants. The beachside Lá Sen gives Vietnamese classics a modern makeover, while Cafe Nam Hai serves both Western and tandoori cuisine. A buffet breakfast is served in the cafe as well and is a marvellous affair resplendent with both Vietnamese delicacies and familiar favourites.

With the beach on your doorstep and three pools to choose from (not to mention the scores of villas that have their own pools), you’ll never be far from a spot to swim. Watersports are plentiful, but if you’d rather keep your feet dry, take beach tai chi, cycle through rice fields or try your hand at badminton, squash or tennis. Hoi An is 15 minutes away, and complimentary shuttles run there and back throughout the day.
