The lobby’s 18th-century elegance transitions to sophisticated, sumptuous rooms. All but ten of the 282 rooms and suites have furnished terraces with sweeping views of the city.
The hotel’s Varanda Restaurant opens up onto a lovely terrace that overlooks Eduardo VII Park. All meals are served there (and the lunchtime buffets are particularly worthwhile) but do get in early to snag one of the twenty outdoor seats. Black truffles get special attention on Varanda’s menu – you can find them in a number of tantalising dishes, perhaps most spectacularly in ice cream. Nikkei-inspired dishes in addition to sushi and saké can be found at O Japonês, and the hotel’s Almada Negreiros Lounge is a popular cocktail spot amongst locals. For another drink (or two), you can also visit Ritz Bar (which has an extensive wine list), or the Ritz Pool Bar, which also features Mediterranean cuisine.
Spectacular city views can be seen from both the floor-to-ceiling windows of the enormous fitness centre as well as from the hotel’s outdoor track. A lovely 18-metre indoor lap pool is bright and open (with plenty of loungers surrounding it), and big windows overlook the hotel’s garden. There are also yoga and pilates classes for guests looking for a guided workout experience.
The spa is arguably one of the very best in Lisbon and – despite having only four treatment rooms – offers an excellent menu that includes its signature ‘Seven Hills of Lisbon’ treatment – the perfect way to recuperate after a day spent walking one (or all) of those legendary hills.
