Some 75 minutes south of Geneva, the ski resort village of Megève is an upmarket hub of upscale dining, boutiques luxurious hotels and deliciously uncrowded mountains. The beloved Mont d’Arbois rises above the quiet town with one hotel finding its home directly on the slopes. That honour goes to the Four Seasons Megève, a relatively new, classy and understated getaway that embodies all things contemporary and alpine-chic.

The hotel’s classically alpine exterior gives way to guestrooms that are refreshingly bright. Cream-on-cream dominates the interior design scheme, with plenty of blonde wood and touches of mocha throughout. Every accent is perfectly, painstakingly coordinated (which tends to be the Four Seasons’ calling card), bathrooms are marble, espresso machines come standard and most (but not all) rooms have private balconies or terraces. All accommodations are lovely, but the speciality suites are where the hotel’s personality truly shines. The ethereal Suite Mont d’Arbois is a manifested daydream set in the palest of pastels with a four-poster bed and panoramic mountain views from the furnished balcony. The Suite des Aravis is its opposite, with a dark, sleek aesthetic that’s resplendent with velvet furniture, evocative modern art and a charcoal marble bathroom.

Le 1920 is the hotel’s show-stopping, two Michelin starred, French restaurant. Unpretentious yet unfailingly excellent, the restaurant features local ingredients in tantalising dishes such as Cardoon from Pregny and Crunchy Giant Langoustine. Dine in the chic, earth-toned dining room or al fresco on the terrace – you’ll have mountain views either way. The restaurant Kaito offers something entirely different: Japanese fusion crafted with Alpine produce on a menu that offers everything from sashimi to teriyaki burgers. Round out your meal with a glass of wine in the sophisticated Bar Edmond or curled up in front of the Lobby Lounge’s cosy fireplace – preferably with a good book and hot cocoa nearby.

What the hotel lacks in true ski-in/ski-out access (which you won’t find much of anywhere in Megève), it makes up for in pure charm. In lieu of a conventional shuttle, horse-drawn carriages will ferry you to and from the lifts. Besides, the distance between the hotel and the Mont d’Arbois lift is just 600 metres – a very doable journey on skis with a bit of cross-country determination. In the warmer months, guests will have access to the picturesque Mont d’Arbois golf course – play a few games at the foot of the mountains before retiring to the temple-like spa for a recovery massage.
