The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus is entirely different from the other Four Seasons Hotel in the heart of Sultanahmet. That one was built in what was once a prison building, and is in the thick of all the tourist traffic, coming and going. This one is farther out of the city and close to the museums, clubs, shops and restaurants that make up the heart of today’s sophisticated, modern Turkey.

Situated within a beautiful 19th-century palace, this is true old-fashioned luxury. The hotel has a vast terrace with an elegant restaurant and a pool area overlooking the Bosphorus that’s hard to tear yourself away from, no matter what delights await outside. Beyond, look over the water, and the Asian banks of the city loom large.

The 141 elegant guest rooms and 25 suites are classic in style and open onto a variety of waterfront, garden and city views. Some rooms are in the palace wing (more expensive, of course), several of which have large, keyhole-shaped floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings and bathrooms in gleaming marble. Others are located within the two modern buildings built behind and at right angles to the palace. All offer a striking blend of Turkish and Ottoman design. It’s worth noting that only 30 per cent of rooms have Bosphorus views; if that’s important, book early to secure yours.

While you’re here, don’t miss the chance to enjoy the spa where the Turkish baths are as old-world as they come, marble colonnades to boot. There’s a sauna, and the indoor pool is delightful. Its mosaic design and underwater sound system will inspire you to swim more lengths than you normally might.

Food being so important to the Turks (and others), the sheer scale of the buffet breakfast is a sight you won’t forget soon. Traditionally-clad women prepare fresh gözleme (flatbread stuffed with assorted savoury fillings) over an open fire, the perfect accompaniment to a strong Turkish coffee. Later in the day try Ockabasi, the pop-up restaurant which serves mezes and mouthwatering grills that are sure to please all ages and palates.

Speaking of age, children are very welcome here, and the big outdoor pool on the terrace will provide plenty of entertainment for kids, in the summer at least. Kids of every age will love the rides in the hotel’s private speedboat to and from just about anywhere.
