When it opened its doors in 1912, the Fairmont Copley Plaza threw a party for over 1000 guests; Boston Mayor John F. Fitzgerald presided over the reception. Over the century, the grande dame has played host to many famous people, including US presidents (every one since Taft), foreign royalty and dignitaries, celebrities and, most notoriously, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton who honeymooned here the second time around.

This stately limestone Beaux-Arts landmark cannot fail to impress. It has a tradition of doing so and has been making waves throughout its history. It has many firsts under its belt: Boston’s first hotel to be fully air-conditioned, the first to have an international reservations system and the pioneer in accepting credit cards as a form of payment.

Boasting 383 classically styled guest rooms, including 17 suites, the gilded age décor is combined with every modern comfort of the highest standard. The hotel also boasts a sparkling beautifully kitted-out 3,000 sq ft (279 sq m) fitness centre with city views. It also has one of the city’s best bars in Boston – the award-winning OAK Long Bar + Kitchen – which attracts just about anyone who’s anybody in town.

You’ll be forgiven if you walk in and think you’re in another city entirely; the Copley Plaza is the original sister hotel of NYC’s Park Plaza. In fact, the PP insignia are still very much in evidence, on doorknobs and the like. The 5,000 sq ft (460 sq m) lobby has a 21-foot (6.4 m) high gilded Neoclassical coffered ceiling with matching Empire-style crystal chandeliers and columns made from Italian marble. Very grand, indeed.

Be sure to request a room overlooking Copley Square. Marbled bathrooms have rain showers and all the creature comforts – like thick, white terry robes and fluffy slippers – you could want or need within. Or opt for a room on the Fairmont Gold level which includes a designated concierge, a private lounge with a fireplace and complimentary hors d'oeuvres in the evenings.

Staff are polished and polite - friendly too. Liveried doormen are always there to hold the door and unburden you of all your shopping. And should you be headed out to the park for a walk or run, they may even hand you the leash of the resident black lab, Carly Copley, who, when she’s not out with a guest, presides over the beautiful lobby from her equally grand dog bed.
