Faena Hotel Buenos Aires
About the hotel
"A former storage mill located in the upmarket Puerto Madero neighbourhood, this stylish hotel boasts great food, a superb outdoor pool and a bar that attracts the city’s best DJs."
We love the posh neighbourhood, although it’s a half-hour’s drive to the city’s main tourist attractions. Once you’ve done those, however, this is where you want to be. Puerto Madero, one of the world’s most successful waterfront regeneration projects, today boasts sleek skyscrapers, the Fortabat Art Collection, upscale steakhouses and bars, boutiques and spectacular outdoor areas for dog walking (jogging?).

There’s no lobby, but you’ll be checked into your room, one of the 88 on offer, in no time. It’s worth noting that not all have spectacular views, and while all are decked out in the hotel’s signature colours, there’s a big difference in size and layout between the premium and executive rooms; we suggest upgrading. If you can swing it, the Faena Suite has some of the best views in the city. Throughout, the beds are comfortable and plush, and the bathrooms have twin sinks, rain showers and – if you’re lucky – rolltop baths. Fresh roses, mostly red, are a nice touch, as is the fact that you’ll find most of your clothes hanging in the closet when you return to your room, no matter how you left them.
Start your evening (and finish it, maybe) at the Library Bar. It’s known for its live entertainment at night and, as it’s popular with the local crowd, you’ll need to get in early to stake out a seat. Dinner at Bistro Sur is pretty special, or you could take it down a notch (in both price and fare) at El Mercado. Sit indoors or out, and enjoy the classic flavours. Post dinner, the cabaret theatre hosts its own tango show — indisputably the most glamorous in town.
Recreation-wise, the hotel is popular for its swimming pool scene, without a doubt the city’s best. The large, outdoor pool has a crown-shaped fountain in the middle (well, no one’s here to do laps) and the (red) plush loungers are super comfortable. Pool-side service is exemplary, and there’s also a spa and hammam for guest use.
