To step through the front doors of The Country Club Lima Hotel is to take a trip back in time. The hotel is a vision of old-world elegance from the brass chandeliers of the lobby and red-carpeted hallways to the soaring ceilings of spacious rooms. Everything has a distinct feel of Spanish colonial opulence – the grandeur of which is heightened by the exquisite collection of 16th-century artwork (on loan from the esteemed Pedro de Osma Museum) that adorns the hotel’s walls.

The hotel is situated in the posh embassy district, and the prestige of its location (and the hotel’s clientele) is reflected in the guestrooms. Dark wood furnishings, elegant columns, warm lighting and brilliant flower arrangements continue the timeless aesthetic, and each room bears a piece of artwork from the Pedro de Osma collection (some have more than one). Marble bathrooms are equally luxurious, and the rooms are well-appointed with all the mod cons one would need.

Perroquet is a place to see and be seen, and the restaurant is often considered one of the city’s finest. In the elegant dining room you’ll be able to have a lavish breakfast, a petit four at teatime and – of course – a marvellous dinner, which focuses on both Peruvian and internationally inspired cuisine. For a change of pace, venture to Vitrales, where you can sip on a cocktail in a light-flooded room beneath a stained-glass ceiling (do be sure to return for Afternoon Tea as well). Live music played on a grand piano encourages one to relax and stay a while; linger till closing and then head to the elegant English Bar. While you’re there, have a Pisco Sour – it’s the national drink of Peru, and the hotel claims to serve one of the capital city’s very best.

There’s not much to do in the immediate surroundings, but the hotel offers a fair bit to do within. The Lima Golf Club is right next door, while non-golfers can keep active in the fitness centre or by taking a dip in the palm tree-surrounded pool. Yaku Spa is sleek and pretty and offers a lengthy menu of treatments, including hair salon services and mani-pedis. Go for a shiatsu massage, a coffee body scrub or for the intriguing-sounding Cutaneous Vitaminization facial. If you’re in the mood for something particularly decadent, try the chocolate body wrap. Most services can also be had in-room as well, ensuring that you can be sufficiently pampered without lifting a finger – except to call the spa, of course.
