In another lifetime, Barcelona’s Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes was home to the headquarters of the Association of Cotton House Manufacturers. Now, the iconic building that housed the Association has been given a new lease on life as Cotton House Hotel; a gorgeous boutique establishment that melds contemporary luxury with the historic building’s original, lovingly preserved 19th-century charm.

Original Belle Époque details characterise the hotel's grand lobby which has been cleverly and lightheartedly brought into the 21st century by the genius of interior designer Lazaro Rosa-Violan. At Cotton House’s heart is a spiral staircase suspended from the ceiling. Built in 1957, this gorgeous piece was highly celebrated by preeminent architects of the time. Beyond the spiral staircase you'll find a beautiful marble one; a few steps more and you’ll reach the guestrooms.

The hotel has just 83 accommodations, of which only five are suites. Rooms are reasonably spacious (by Barcelona standards, anyway) and are made to feel even larger thanks to tall windows and a colour scheme set almost entirely in white. Nearly everything – save for wooden floors, bedside tables and gilded accents throughout – is set in this crisp, clean shade, and the spaces are given just a touch of regal flair with stylish lighting and tufted leather wingback chairs – which are white, of course.

The hotel has just one eatery within its walls, and it is perfectly superb. Called Batuar, this restaurant focuses on Mediterranean fare and aims to capture the true essence of Barcelona and of life in such a vibrant city. Expect Catalan dishes with a fusion twist, meals prepared by visiting Michelin-starred chefs and absolutely excellent cocktails. If you're in the mood for a drink without a meal attached, the hotel’s gorgeous library is the perfect spot to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee (or a cocktail) in hand.

Cotton House has a reasonably well-equipped fitness centre and a pretty (but rather small) outdoor swimming pool. While the hotel’s immediate neighbourhood isn't much of a destination in and of itself (unless you're a visiting diplomat or businessperson, that is), getting to many of the city’s finest attractions requires just a short taxi ride; you can easily get to the iconic Sagrada Familia in under ten minutes, a trip to La Catedral takes half of that, and even Park Güile is a just a fifteen-minute ride away.
