The Michelin-starred restaurant Le Jardin de Berne (which also boasts a Michelin Sustainable Gastronomy Green Star) is the undisputed highlight of the eateries, in which Chefs Eric Raynal and Louis Rameau take guests on a flavourful journey ‘from the soil to the soul’. Set in a white-tablecloth dining room that fuses refined sophistication with natural whimsy, this is memorable for truly inspired cuisine. While Le Jardin de Berne is certainly hard to beat, there are a number of other marvellous eateries as well. The name 'Gomberts' is a tribute to the former owner of the land, a former Duke of Provence. The word "mas", on the other hand, has Provençal origins. At the time, the mas was used as a dwelling, but also as an agricultural building used for growing wheat, fruit and vegetables, and for rearing farmyard animals.
With this in mind, this rural building has been completely restored, retaining its charm thanks to its stone façade and perfectly landscaping its exterior with an olive grove, a vegetable garden and a field of lavender, so typical of Provence. This old building has been completely transformed into a traditional Provencal bastide. At the time, the bastide was a secondary residence for the bourgeoisie and nobility. The basic codes and architecture have been preserved, notably the shape of the house with a single storey and a 4-pitched roof, an odd number of windows on the main façade, French windows on the ground floor and external courtyards.
The name Vanado, in Provençal, means the enclosure in front of the sheepfold, an area that was once dedicated to the animals. A nod to Provence, but also to the many animals that populated and still populate the Château de Berne estate.
