Among the heavily commercialised islands of the Caribbean, a small island to the east holds its own as a tropical paradise that retains its authentic roots. Enter Anguilla – high rises, casinos and cruise ships are banned here, and the result is absolute luxury without the tourist-trap feel. On a beach overlooking Maundays Bay sits Belmond Cap Juluca: a beautiful Greco-Moorish resort that looks pulled from a postcard. Renovated and reborn in Autumn 2018, the resort – already an icon of Caribbean hospitality – has elevated itself to an even higher standard of luxury.

Inside the white-stuccoed, domed-roof buildings, rooms are upscale but pleasantly laid back. Neutral palettes of soft whites and sand tones are brightened here and there by lively pillows, throw blankets and wall art. Minibars are well-stocked with groceries that you can request in advance, and all rooms face the ocean. There are no buildings on the property taller than two stories, guaranteeing that your private terrace will have captivating views. Upgrade to one of the Suites with Pools or a Villa, and you’ll have your own freshwater pool as well.

Sidle down to the beach and you’ll find two plush, umbrella-shaded beach loungers reserved for you. Intercom systems built into the loungers ensure that you can have your every whim catered to without lifting a finger – beyond the finger you’ll lift to push the button, of course.

When you finally tear yourself away for a meal, visit the chic Pimms restaurant for upscale Anguillian cuisine. Another option, Cip’s by Cipriani, is Venetian in style and comfortably relaxed with its fresh Italian fare (and lengthy wine list). The Cap Shack’s vintage food truck serves beachside barbecue and rum punch accompanied by lively reggae tunes, and all three restaurants – unsurprisingly – have spectacular Caribbean views. Dine on flavourful Peruvian cuisine beneath the stars at Uchu, which boasts a ceviche bar and a picturesque poolside setting.

Though the resort is somewhat removed from the rest of the island’s dining and entertainment, you’ll likely find that you won't want for anything. For all things pampering, the Arawak Spa has two outdoor cabanas as well as three treatment rooms indoors. A fitness centre is present, but is small and a bit underwhelming; thankfully, exercise enthusiasts have no shortage of outdoor options. Croquet, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts are all on-site, and guests have access to the nearby Cuisinart golf course. There are complimentary water sports – wakeboarding, sailing, kayaking and tubing to name a few – though no one will fault you if you choose to spend your time lounging blissfully instead.
