Birkenhead House
About the hotel
"Set on a picturesque coastal clifftop, the boutique Birkenhead House is widely considered one of the best hotels in South Africa and boasts charming guestrooms, fabulous dining and a postcard-worthy location."
Birkenhead House's location could not be better if it tried; its perch on a rocky promontory affords the property exceptional views of the sea; the picture-perfect setting is made even better by a beach cove flanking it on either side. The tranquillity and privacy of the location doesn’t come at the expense of convenience, though; the town centre is an easy drive away and can be reached in about an hour on foot.
Those unbroken views of the water extend to just two of the guestrooms; snag one of these if you can but know that you’ll be thoroughly spoiled no matter where you stay. Each of the eleven accommodations... Show more

Those unbroken views of the water extend to just two of the guestrooms; snag one of these if you can but know that you’ll be thoroughly spoiled no matter where you stay. Each of the eleven accommodations is uniquely and individually designed by owner Liz Biden, who lends both her eye for elegance and penchant for whimsy to the spaces. No detail is overlooked within, from the unique headboards and enchanting artwork to the posies of fresh flowers found here and there throughout. The spaces at large are set in beachy pastels and are flooded with natural light, and each room has its own private furnished balcony or outdoor space. The bathrooms, in particular, deserve mention, especially given that they are almost as large as the rooms themselves. The whole ambience has the bespoke charm of a holiday spent at a friend's enchanting beach house.
Dining at Birkenhead House is a delightful experience, thanks not only to the food but also to the truly spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel's proximity to the water is a boon for seafood enthusiasts: everything on the menu – needless to say – is spectacularly fresh. Indeed, coastal cuisine is the main inspiration for the gastronomy found at the hotel. Begin your day with a deliciously lavish breakfast buffet and return later for a tapas-style lunch or a superb dinner. There is special care taken to accommodate guests with all manner of dietary restrictions, including an assortment of menus explicitly intended for vegetarians. Guests looking to get a little more hands-on with their experience can go on mussel-picking adventures with the hotel chefs or enjoy wine tastings that feature several Pinot Noirs from the region.
