One of the first things you’ll be bound to notice upon setting foot in the hotel is the art. It’s everywhere, from the prominently featured pieces to the magical little surprises that seemingly hide around every corner. Expect unorthodox furniture, dozens of pieces of digital art, inspired lighting fixtures, and more. Expect unorthodox furniture, dozens of pieces of digital art, inspired lighting fixtures, and more. The hotel does not attempt to tone down the strangeness of it all; one could certainly say that it’s weird, but no one would ever say that it’s anything less than glamorous.
The chic surrealism continues on in guest rooms, of which there are just 122. All are delightful and wonderfully odd – how could you not appreciate an enormous fish-spoon hybrid hanging prominently above an elegant bed? You’ll find other quirky fish details throughout, alongside snazzy wing-back chairs and soothing colour schemes of white and blue. Mod cons are plentiful, and the in-room TV has access to the hotel's video art collection if you’re in the mood to browse. Everything about the accommodations is very open-plan, including the bathrooms. As such, the light-filled rooms feel plenty spacious. Views vary, but you can’t go wrong either way, whether you’re gazing out over the canal or at the cheeky internal courtyard with its unexpected topiary and wonderland-esque garden.
Bluespoon restaurant (also designed by Wanders) is a cheerfully strange place with a delectable menu. Fare is fabulous and top-notch without being fussy, and the menu changes with the seasons: if you’re visiting in the warmer months, for example, you’ll have a magnificent Mediterranean takeover experience. End your day with a creative cocktail from the Bluespoon Bar, such as the Dutch Appeltaart or the ‘Calm As You Are’, which includes chamomile tea.
The artwork is the main draw here, but the hotel also offers a small spa and a 24-hour fitness centre with personal trainers and private yoga classes upon request.
