Island time – something we all need every now and then – is surely well spent at the gorgeous Anantara Layan upon golden sands. A true hideaway, the resort is located on a bay where lazy days start with heavenly breakfasts enjoyed overlooking the peaceful waters, and evenings begin on the terrace of your room surveying the sunset.

Nestled among the rich foliage of the jungle on a secluded enclave at the end of Layan beach, the hotel has 30 rooms and suites as well as 47 pool villas in nine uniquely impressive styles. All are spacious, with wooden floors and beautiful fixtures and furnishings and a touch of the Orient.

Open structures and traditional gabled roofs, wooden salas, orchids in every room and colourful silk furnishings are everywhere. It should be noted that some of the villas are located close to the beach, but this is not the best beach you’ve ever seen. In fact, since it’s a bay, the tide goes out in the afternoon taking the water with it. So if you fancy a swim in the sea, you need to do so in the morning.

A big part of Anantara’s DNA is their superb spa culture. So after a day indulging in watersports, taking a class or two – yoga, boot camp, Tai Chi or Muay Thai – visiting Phi Phi or snorkelling the waters of the Similan Islands, a visit to the spa may just be the thing you need. Elemis products are used, and there’s a private pool here where you can relax after your treatment.

There’s a hairdresser, too, so you’ll be ready for dinner in no time. First, however, have a drink at the Mojito Factory – the coolest thing in beachside pop-ups. After which, dinner at Dee Plee is something to look forward to. The restaurant does all it can to source food sustainably and organically and, if you wish, they can set up a romantic table for a loved-up evening for two just about anywhere you choose – with a big smile, something you’ll never get tired of seeing while you’re here.
