Unless you’re acquainted with Sri Lankan design, it’s possible you won’t have heard of the modernist architectural movement which took place here in the 20th century, or of its most famous figurehead, the late Geoffrey Bawa. Bawa had a huge impact on building design, evident here at Amanwella in so many ways.

The setting over the stunning, palm-fringed, crescent-shaped golden bay is undeniably breathtaking, and the design is unapologetically modern. With the use of elegant dark beams and columns, local and aged terracotta tiles, and huge glass doors and windows which remain open in clement weather, the effect of such clean lines is to frame the natural views and bring the outside indoors. Tangalle lies some five miles (8 km) to the east, and local sights including Mulkirigala Rock Temple, Rekawa’s turtle beach and several crafts villages are nearby, as well as some superb national parks (with wildlife).

The footprint of the hotel is super-generous – 800 metres of beachfront bliss – and with only 27 suites, you’ll rarely run into other guests too often, perfect if you’re here on a honeymoon or other romantic encounter. With beauty all around, it’s worth noting that the sea is pretty rough and not recommended for swimmers on the weaker side. Luckily, there’s a lovely, huge pool at the resort, one where lounging around for the day with a novel makes for the perfect way to relax. Pool service is no problem; just raise your hand.

Spacious suites come with a view, a terrace, a pool and some very dedicated butler service. They vary, so make sure you specify you want a full ocean vista, or you may end up overlooking neighbouring rooftops. (Suites 108-114 have the best ocean views.) There’s a coffee machine in the room, but the butler will be happy to bring you a cup of joe upon request should you prefer. Try the South Indian version that will arrive with a frothy topping made from boiled milk. Bathrooms are large, with tubs and separate monsoon showers and lots of extra goodies like beach mats, rattan bags, aftersun cream, mossie repellent and sun hats.

Have an Ayurvedic spa treatment and then drinks at the Beach Club. Dinner at the Restaurant will be a feast of all things fresh from the land and sea, as spicy as you dare.
