Amankila, which translates to ‘peaceful hill’, is set on a cliffside overlooking the Lombok Strait in East Bali. It’s a tranquil spot, inspired by the nearby Karangasem palaces and features a private stretch of black sand beach and a lovely beach club for relaxing, lazy days.

From the intimate, airy lobby, you’ll see the sea and surrounding hillside immediately. Suites here are elevated to take full advantage of the magnificent views. Fashioned as beach houses with a twist, suites reflect the lines and flow of their East Bali surroundings, in particular, the royal water palace just outside Amlapura, the district’s capital. Several suites feature private swimming pools, and they all have Alang-Alang thatched roofs and are connected to the reception and restaurant area by stepped walkways.

If you can bear to tear yourself away, The Beach Club is located at the base of the cliff, and if you don’t feel like taking the short walk, you can be driven there in one of Amankila’s open-air buggies. Snorkelling equipment, windsurfs, boogie boards, kayaks and Hobie Cats are all available, and lessons or sailing partners can be arranged. There’s also a swimming pool at The Beach Club, while just below Amankila’s lobby is the signature three-tier pool that is set into the cliffs and dominates the landscape beautifully.

Amidst the lush landscaping, there are eight private lounging bales where drinks and light meals can be enjoyed. Meanwhile, the restaurant, which overlooks the ocean, is open for dinner and features Western and Indonesian cuisines and The Terrace serves Asian dishes. For a local experience, indulge in afternoon tea served in front of the Library, where you’ll be served delicious goodies including local Balinese cakes with Bali kopi or Indonesian ginger tea by local women dressed in sarongs and kebayas.

As lovely as Amankila is, do get out and explore. The traditional villages of Manggis, Candi Dasa and Tenganan are nearby, and you can take a jeep tour, a trek or a bicycle ride through the countryside. If you need to relax afterwards, traditional Balinese massages can be enjoyed in your suite, at the massage pavilion or the Beach Club – bliss.
