Surrounded by rice terraces and lush green valleys is Amandari, perched above the bubbling Ayung River. The resort boasts oodles of tropical flowers and fauna displayed against the backdrop of traditional Paras stone carved walls. Amandari has 30 suites and villas (some single, some duplex; some with private pools, some without) overlooking the Ayung River. The singsong and chatter of birds surround guests through daylight hours; the tranquillity of the evenings will only be interrupted by the sound of cicadas, the occasional frog and, in celebration, the clinking of your cocktail glasses at sundowners.

It’s the perfect rural retreat. The hotel is located in the little village of Kedewatan, and a complimentary car transfer makes visiting the island’s nearby cultural capital, Ubud, very easy. In Ubud, you can explore the many shops, art galleries, museums and the Pasar Seni market. Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport is around a one-hour drive away.

A sophisticated take on classic Balinese styling, the buildings all have thatched roofs, tiled floors and sliding glass doors that open up to sweeping views. Beds are romantically hand-carved in teak wood and are adorned with finely-painted murals, while bathrooms are bright and spacious with outdoor sunken marble bathtubs. The free-standing Village Suites are accessed via winding pebble pathways, much like a traditional Balinese village. With suites starting at a palatial 220 square metres, each is surrounded by lush, tropical foliage and features a private garden with an outdoor living area perfect for stargazing and birdwatching.

The Restaurant, open to the breezes, is crafted of teak wood and overlooks Amandari's swimming pool and the gorge. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and specialises in Western and local Indonesian dishes. The Bar, with its terrace seating, offers up a wide selection of drinks in a perfect environment to while away the evening hours.
