Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
About the hotel
"A secluded retreat surrounded by russet-red dunes, the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa is a romantic hideaway with lavish tents, fine dining and plenty of traditional desert sports."
Nestled in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, Al Maha plays an integral part in conserving the region’s way of life. Bedouin heritage and architecture is showcased in the main reception building, which represents an ancient fortress with billowing curtains, Arabian rugs, Bedouin water jars and decorative copper coffee pots. Splashes of this style continue into the guest suites: stand-alone tents that sleep from two to six guests. Each features handcrafted Arabian furnishings, antiques and artefacts, and you’ll also find a pair of binoculars and artist’s materials should you spot something you’d like to paint. And when you wish to cool off, step down into your private plunge pool.

A veritable oasis, the resort offers a host of exciting activities, but the Arabian Oryx – bred successfully at the reserve – is the star attraction. You can take a guided nature walk or a wildlife safari in an air-conditioned 4x4 to spot the shy beauties, but for a more hands-on wildlife experience, there are the region’s traditional sports to enjoy: falconry, horse-riding with beautiful Arabian horses and camel-trekking, all of which conclude with sundowners in the dunes.
In between desert pursuits, treat yourself to a visit to the Timeless Spa which offers a range of signature treatments influenced by Middle Eastern and South-East Asian aromatherapy traditions. There’s also a private massage room for couples, a private Rasoul chamber, hydrotherapy bath, a sauna and steam room, as well as a swimming pool and a fully-equipped fitness centre.
There’s fine dining to be enjoyed at Al Diwaan, with regional or international dishes to choose from, and you can opt to dine alfresco on the verandah or in the privacy of your suite. Meanwhile, the Hajar Terrace Bar serves a fine high tea and drinks, including cocktails. For the ultimate indulgence, private dune dining is always a good idea with a canopy of stars, flame torches and Persian carpets to set a memorable scene for a magical dinner.
