Built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the year 1681, Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle began its life by playing host to some of the Enlightenment's greatest political and artistic minds. In its early days, the hotel's setting within the gates of Versailles made it a landmark destination quite unlike any other; a sentiment that still rings true to this day. Meticulous restorations over the centuries have kept the property at the height of its glory, and the hotel offers its modern-day guests an intimate glimpse behind the curtains of the glamorous life of Versailles.

Just fourteen rooms and suites comprise this exclusive getaway, and each is utterly magnificent. ‘Fit for Royalty’ is more than just a sentiment here, thanks to both the hotel’s royal address and the magnificently regal nature of the rooms. Each is a picture-perfect homage to the property’s storied past and is sumptuously appointed with absolute luxury in mind. Dazzling chandeliers, exquisite wallpaper and magnificent beds canopied with swaths of coordinating fabric are just the tip of the interior design iceberg. Chevron parquet flooring, antique furniture and handcrafted eighteenth-century ornaments lend a distinct sense of place to the spaces, and sumptuous bathrooms feature stand-alone tubs. The crème-de-la-crème of the hotel is Le Grand Appartement, which – true to its name – is nothing short of spectacular. Legendary chef Alain Ducasse is the mastermind behind the gastronomy scene at Le Grand Contrôle, which whisks guests on a culinary journey that spans the centuries. In the mornings, enjoy a lavish breakfast whilst gazing out at the gorgeous Orangery. Lunch is a spectacular affair (choose from two, three or five courses) and the Marie Antoinette-inspired Afternoon Tea is certainly not to be missed. Alain Ducasse’s incredible dinners are inspired by the royal feasts of old and are spectacular, almost theatrical affairs. Le Bar de la Chappelle should not be forgotten for a pre-or-post prandial beverage; the venue’s signature cocktails are particularly good (champagne served over seasonally scented granite, anyone?).

All the glory of Versailles is on full display at The Valmont Spa, which features gorgeous treatment rooms alongside a sauna and hammam. The icing on the spa’s already impressive cake would have to be its pool, which is surrounded by velvet loungers, Romanesque statues and hand-painted frescoes.
