Mexico’s Best Winter Surf Destinations

ASMALLWORLD

Scattered along a 5,800-mile stretch of coastline, Mexico’s vast beaches, with their soft sand, aquamarine waters, and barrel-shaped waves, have become renowned across the globe. As the weather cools down in other parts of the world, temperatures here hardly drop below 15 degrees – ideal conditions for a spot of winter surfing.

Ensenada, Baja California

This port city is located on the northwestern coast of Mexico, with a huge stretch of sand that attracts surfers from across the world. Autumn and winter tend to be the best times to visit, when offshore winds whip across the exposed beach and powerful swells produce large, rolling waves. This is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, so it’s recommended to visit at off-peak times when the beach is less crowded.

Sayulita, Nayarit

There are two great surf spots along this beach: one for beginners and the other for more advanced surfers. Both long and shortboarders flock here for the varied wave patterns, so it’s worth a visit if you like to mix it up with different styles. Conditions here are good all year round, but the months between December and April are supposedly the best.

Pascuales, Colima

Seasoned surfers love this beach, located at the southern point of Mexico, due to its enormous, barrelling waves. It’s recommended that beginners refrain from surfing here for this very reason, so be sure to check with an experienced instructor before diving in. Pascuales is a beautiful spot flanked by palm trees and wooden huts, so you can truly immerse yourself in the Great Outdoors.
