Island Hopping: Greece in September

ASMALLWORLD

Home to over 90 islands, Greece offers a range of activities alongside a rich history, landscape and culinary scene. Enjoy a classic Greek salad, some fresh seafood, or perhaps some kumquat baklava before navigating the ancient ruins and artefacts. The best way to explore the islands is by one of the ferry routes, which can become overcrowded during summer months. Come September, however, when the weather is cooler and crowds have dispersed, your travel adventure will go undisturbed.

Corfu

With the largest land mass of all the Greek islands, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Corfu. The capital, Corfu Town, is a unique mix of Norman-Venetian influences, with cobbled streets, vibrant bougainvillea, and crumbling stone houses overlooked by two ancient castles. Across the island there are a number of small fishing villages with tavernas and markets selling local delicacies, as well as idyllic beaches, trendy bars, and unique places of interest – like The Durrell house from ‘My Family and Other Animals’ and scenes from the 007 franchise.

Santorini

Santorini is known for its whitewashed buildings and artisanal crafts scene – not to mention the delicious Assyrtiko. Relax on a private terrace overlooking the rocky coastline or explore the volcanic beaches and historical sites that are scattered across the island. Be sure to visit the preserved Minoan ruins of Akrotiri, which has been unofficially titled the ‘Pompeii of the Aegean’.

Zakynthos

One of the quieter islands, Zakynthos is famed for its rural mountain villages and hiking trails, as well as being the scene of a large shipwreck in the 1980s, which remains on Navagio Beach. Explore the island’s sandy shores or take to the water on an Ionian sailing adventure.

Mykonos

Ever fancied a visit to the so-called ‘Playground of the Gods’? The island certainly lives up to its reputation, with stylish beach clubs and boutiques lining the coastline. Travel further inland and you’ll discover the island’s rugged iconic windmills and Cycladic architecture, such as the Church of Panagia Paraportiani.

As an ASMALLWORLD member, you have access to the finest accommodation across the Greek archipelago. In Corfu you can have direct beach access and the choice of a private Jacuzzi at the Domes Miramare, or a massage using locally sourced herbs and oils at the Angsana hotel’s luxurious Angsana Spa. If Zakynthos is more up your street, the PORTO ZANTE VILLAS & SPA boasts a dreamy infinity pool overlooking the scenic coastline.
