Historic Bathhouses Across the Globe

ASMALLWORLD

Public baths have been in use for centuries, ranging from Turkish Hammams to Korean Jimiljangs and today they are back in vogue. But it can be a challenge to find bathhouses that are still in use. Discover some of the world’s best below.

Hagia Sophia Hurrem Sultan Bathhouse, Istanbul, Türkiye

Step back in time with a visit to this 16th-century bathhouse. The Hamman, which retains its men’s and women’s areas, is located in Hagia Sophia, central Istanbul. The interiors are filled with ornate Ottoman design features, stained-glass panelling, and three adjoining rooms within the men’s and women’s sections, encompassing different elements of the Hamman (hot, warm, and cool).

Niwa no Yu, Tokyo, Japan

Japan maintains a long history of onsen and sento hot springs and bathing facilities. These bathhouses are deeply ingrained in Japanese culture and are well worth a visit if you’re thinking of travelling to the area. Niwa no Yu is nestled within an idyllic Japanese garden just a 25-minute drive from central Tokyo, and is a large complex made up of three zones: hot baths, sauna, and bade areas for all-round health and wellbeing.

Take the indulgence one step further with a stay at the Tokyo Edition. Here, you can finish your day with a delicious serving of Wagyu beef at the hotel’s elegant restaurant, The Blue Room, which offers enviable views of the Tokyo skyline.

RELAXING IN JAPAN

Roman Baths, Bath, UK

One of the oldest remaining bathhouses in the world, this renowned Roman site in Bath has been running since approximately 70AD. More than 1,000,000 litres of steaming spring water fills these ancient baths every day, with designated plunge pools and socialising areas. It's well worth visiting this historical city, which is home to a number of well-preserved Roman ruins and just a short train ride from London.

Book a stay at the London Marriott hotel, located in the city centre, for access to trainlines towards Bath and the Roman ruins. With direct views of the Thames and access to the bustling Southbank, this is a convenient city base.

Of course, you can browse and book all of these hotels and more on the ASMALLWORLD Collection.
