Exploring Vienna’s Coffeehouses

ASMALLWORLD

Vienna is known across the globe for its decadent sweet treats, but what you might not realise is that it’s also the unassuming coffee capital of Europe. This regal city, with its marble-clad buildings and cobblestone streets, has served steaming pots of coffee over games of pool and cards for centuries. Discover our editor’s picks of the very best coffee houses in the city.

Cafe Schwarzenberg

This historic institution is rumoured to be the oldest cafe in Vienna. Cafe Schwarzenberg was renovated in 1979 after falling into disrepair following the Soviet post-war occupation. Today, it is decked with velvet curtains, ornate furnishings and fancy coffee to match. Come here for a taste of Vienna at its finest.

Café Central

Established in 1876, Café Central was once frequented by Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky and Austrian architect Adolf Loos amongst others. Soak up the history under the Pseudo-Gothic vaulted ceilings with some traditional coffee and cake.

Kleines Cafe

Don’t be fooled by this tiny establishment. Translating directly as “Small Café”, the café certainly makes use of its space, serving delicious light bites and coffee that packs a punch. The café featured in the first film of Richard Linklater’s renowned trilogy, ‘Before Sunrise’, and with the romantic setting it’s not hard to see why.

Café Sacher Wien

Head here for a slice of Sacher-Torte, the famous Viennese cake that this café made its name with. It’s so popular that they won’t even share the recipe – how could you resist?

The coffeehouse can be found at Hotel Sacher Wien, an equally iconic institution in central Vienna which is also part of the ASMALLWORLD Collection. Sleep in style in the hotel’s elegant guest rooms, which have also housed HRH. Queen Elizabeth II and President John F. Kennedy. When you’re not feasting on Café Sacher’s decadent cakes, enjoy some time to yourself at the onsite Sacher Boutique Spa or 24-hour fitness centre.
