Explore Amsterdam’s Artistic Masterpieces

ASMALLWORLD

Looking for a creative escapade in the heart of Europe? With its web of waterways, bridges, and sculptural brickwork, Amsterdam is teeming with artistic expression and history. The city has drawn influences from the Jugendstil, Expressionist and Art Deco periods and there are plenty of museums and galleries to explore throughout your stay.

Stedelijk Museum

Kickstart your Amsterdam cultural tour with the contemporary art showcased at the 117-year-old Stedelijk Museum’s new modern extension – which is playfully designed to replicate a bathtub. The world-famous museum is located on the outer edges of Amsterdam’s centre, close to several other museums and art institutes, and most recently hosted a retrospective of Marina Abramovic’s work. The exhibition ‘The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art’ launched on the 14th of September, examines the profound influence of art on political history.

Van Gogh Museum

Just around the corner from the Stedelijk Museum is the equally fascinating Van Gogh Museum. As the name suggests, this gallery houses the renowned artist’s most coveted works of art, from scenic landscape paintings to detailed self-portraits. A large courtyard sits between the two galleries, where you can rest your eyes before embarking on the next adventure.

Rijksmuseum

When you’re craving a serious dive into art history, make your way over to this handsome 19th-century institute. The five-minute walk takes you directly to the museum’s location on the Riverside although you can opt for a slightly longer route through the scenic Museumplein. The Rijksmuseum houses a vast collection of European and Dutch Golden Age pieces as well as unique events and activities, such as its Dutch painting masterclass.
