Diwali Across the Globe

ASMALLWORLD

Diwali is a major festival of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism, symbolising light triumphing over darkness. Communities across the world unite for this joyful celebration, which takes place over several days each year, with this year's main festivities occurring from 31st October to 1st November. Our editors have rounded up the best spots to take part in the festivities.

Goa

While Diwali today is celebrated on a global scale, it’s important to recognise its origins in India. The word Diwali stems from “deepavali”, which translates as “row of lights” – used to describe the clay lamps that historically lined doorways of homes in India.

You’ll find Diwali celebrations occurring across the country, but Goa is a great place to start – especially since it is typically the region’s dry season at this time of year. Located on the southwestern coast of India, you can celebrate Diwali in Goa by sunning yourself on the beach or lighting a candle over dinner made from fresh, local produce.

TRADITIONAL DIWALI LIGHTS

Bali

Bali might not be your first choice for Diwali celebrations, but the predominantly Hindu population puts on bold displays and performances that are worth getting involved with. The oceanic paradise is also a hotspot for surfing, nature trails and mountainous sunset views.

Singapore

Head over to Singapore for an ultra-stylish festive period. This elegant city, known for its innovative technology, elegant rooftop bars and spotless streets – not to mention the fantastic Garden Rhapsody light shows at Gardens by the Bay – is a great spot for your Diwali celebrations.
