Discover Chiang Mai's Festivals of Light

ASMALLWORLD

Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is home to mesmerising full moon festivals, steeped in tradition and spirituality. The Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festivals are particularly noteworthy, drawing travellers from around the globe to enjoy celebrations of light and life. This year, these radiant festivities will span three evenings, beginning on 14th November and continuing through to the 16th.

Yi Peng Lantern Festival

The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is a highlight of Chiang Mai's cultural calendar. Held during the full moon of the Lanna lunar calendar's second month, this festival transforms the night sky into a sea of glowing lanterns. Participants release khom loi (sky lanterns) into the air, each carrying personal wishes and prayers. This act symbolises the release of misfortune and the welcoming of good fortune.

The festival's origins trace back to ancient Lanna traditions, where it was believed that releasing lanterns would bring prosperity and happiness. Key locations for viewing include Mae Jo University, known for its organised mass lantern releases, where you can join thousands in launching their lanterns into the sky amidst a backdrop of cultural performances and local cuisine. Public areas such as Nawarat Bridge also host gatherings where you can take part in this luminous tradition without formalities.

As night falls, the atmosphere becomes electric with excitement and reverence. The sight of thousands of lanterns floating upwards creates a breathtaking spectacle that resonates with both joy and reflection. Many visitors take part in traditional ceremonies at temples, where monks chant blessings, adding a spiritual dimension to the festivities.

Loy Krathong Festival

Coinciding with Yi Peng is the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated by floating krathongs – beautifully decorated floats made from banana leaves – on water. This ritual is an expression of gratitude to the water goddess and a symbolic release of past grievances. The Ping River in Chiang Mai becomes a spectacle as thousands of krathongs illuminate its surface, creating a magical scene.

Loy Krathong has its roots in ancient practices that honour water spirits and seek forgiveness for past wrongdoings. The festival typically features vibrant street markets filled with local delicacies, traditional music, and dance performances that celebrate Thai culture. You have the opportunity to craft your own krathong during a workshop or purchase them locally.

As participants release their krathongs into the river, they often make wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity. The sight of these glowing floats drifting away under the moonlight is both poignant and beautiful, embodying themes of renewal and hope.
