Cultural Day Trips from London

ASMALLWORLD

If you’re travelling to London or happen to be based there, it’s worth visiting some of the surrounding sights. The UK is steeped in history and culture – most of which is easily accessible via train or car. Discover some of our favourite cultural day trip locations below.

Oxford and Cambridge

Kick off your cultural adventures with a visit to either – or both – of these renowned cities. Retrace the footsteps of luminaries of note in the university grounds or explore the Gothic architecture before enjoying a punt along the river. You will also find several old pubs layered in history – including the Grade II-listed Bath House in Cambridge and 14th century Turf Tavern in Oxford. Both cities are about an hour from London, with direct train links running daily.
KING’S COLLEGE CHAPEL, CAMBRIDGE

Windsor

Home to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, this city is primed for a historical visit. The 11th-century royal residence is renowned for its long-standing association with the British Royal family, and has housed numerous members of royalty, heads of state and notable figures over the years.

Brighton

For a traditional British seaside experience, head to Brighton, which is between 1-2 hours from London. Enjoy some soft serve from one of the nearby ice cream vans before wandering around the market stalls selling vintage goods and antiques on The Lanes, or enjoying a competitive arcade game at Brighton Palace Pier. Don’t miss the town’s most magical place amongst the pastel-coloured hue of terraced houses: the Indo-Saracenic Royal Pavilion, a magnificent structure surrounded by manicured lawns.

BRIGHTON BEACH

Bath

For a touch of Roman history and Georgian elegance head west to Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its thermal springs. Visit the Roman Baths or admire the intricate facade of Bath Abbey, before exploring the picturesque Georgian squares that inspired Jane Austen.
