An Autumn Walk in Norwich, England

ASMALLWORLD

Once known as England’s ‘second city’ due to its size and proximity to London, Norwich in the East of England makes for a perfect autumnal day trip. Here you will discover a number of ancient sites as well as lush parks, historic pubs, and a booming arts and culinary scene. The city has been dubbed one of the most vegan-friendly places in the UK – an achievement gained through its variety of market stalls, trendy cafés, and fine dining experiences.

Starting in the city centre, the 12th-century Norwich Castle is a magnificent fortress that dominates the city skyline. The castle is perched atop a large hill, offering stunning views of the city below. Nearby, Norwich Cathedral is equally stunning, with Norman-era architecture and the second largest spire in England.

The cathedral’s cloisters are the perfect spot for some peaceful reflection, and the surrounding Cathedral Close (with picturesque old cottages and leafy green spaces) provides a tranquil setting for an autumn stroll. From here, you can make your way down to the riverside, where you will find a signposted walking trail that runs alongside the River Wensum from the cathedral towards the old town, city centre and train station.

Follow the riverside trail back up into the city to an area called Tombland, where it's just a short walk to the picturesque Elm Hill and Magdalen Street. Several antiques, vintage and independent shops line the route and, as you wander through the cobbled Norwich Lanes, you’ll see timber-framed houses, many of which date back to Tudor times. There’s also a number of great theatre and music locations, from the Norwich Arts Centre to The Maddermarket, Norwich Theatre Playhouse, and Norwich Theatre Royal. When it’s time for some respite from the cold, it’s worth a visit to the Playhouse just to admire the decor in the popular theatre bar – an intimate space with great coffee, live music performances and a miniature 3D city hanging from the ceiling.

Norwich is situated just a short train ride or car journey from London, Oxford, and Cambridge. Embark on a day trip or enjoy a weekend away in this charming city.
