After Dubai, Abu Dhabi is the second most popular destination in the United Arab Emirates. Those who travel to Abu Dhabi usually search for culture and luxury — maybe even a little adventure. One neighbourhood often overlooked in the region is Al Bateen. To locals, it's known as Abu Dhabi's coolest neighbourhood, and after a bit of shopping, dining, and exploring, it's easy to see why. Al Bateen is the perfect place to unwind and sink into the edge of Abu Dhabi's way of life. You can get a culture fix at the various art galleries, lounge beachside, or taste the trendy restaurants. Even the cafes have waiting lists here if that's any indication of what Al Bateen offers.

Hit the Shops

The Nation Towers Mall is a modern shopping destination that offers high-end boutique shops to international restaurants cushioned beneath the Nation Towers on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Scour three floors of fashion, fitness, beauty, and jewellery. Once you've successfully covered every inch, refresh at a cafe or indulge in a night out with friends whilst sampling the gourmet cuisine. There are also fantastic views from the terraces, so be sure to get to one.

While wandering the streets of Al Bateen, keep an eye out for boutique shops, such as Corso Design. This furniture store stocks beautiful high-end design pieces, including chairs, tables and more. There are also many small fashion stores with independent local designers and antique storefronts.

Experience the Art and Culture

There is no shortage of art museums in Al Bateen. The Etihad Modern Art Gallery is by far the most popular of them. It showcases local and regional talents across a wide range of technical fields, supporting the artistic and creative scene in the UAE. The exhibitions are constantly changing, so check the website before your visit.

In the nearby neighbourhood of Al Hisn, is Qasr AlHosn, the oldest standing building in Abu Dhabi. The stunning white stone fort was built in 1970 and overlooked the coastal trade routes, which offered protection for the local settlement. It has been completely restored and welcomes visitors to explore its beautiful interiors.

The Manarat AlSaadiyat isn't exactly near Al Bateen but should be on the bucket list for anyone who loves high-tech. The building itself is an impressive installation, but there are large-scale installations from international artists, cultural displays and theatre exhibitions inside. At night, the white honeycomb lattice covering the exterior lights up.

Eats

Al Bateen is a culinary playground for travellers, from steakhouses to Mediterranean afternoon tea. Whether you're looking for all-day dining, a swanky night venue, or coffee and pastries, there are plenty of places to try.

Montauk Boutique Cafe and Restaurant is known as the most Instagrammable restaurant in Abu Dhabi. The menu is modern with a touch of fine dining — a nod to the Hamptons, New York. It's open for breakfast, but lunch and dinner is the best time to visit.

Curated by Tom Aikens, the Oak Room is an award-winning steakhouse in Al Bateen, and a must-visit. The opulent furnishings and statement light piece set the establishment's tone. Located inside The Abu Dhabi EDITION hotel, the Oak Room is frequented by hotel guests, but non-guests can secure a table with some pre-planning involved. As for the menu, expect quality cuts of meat. The list is long, but the meat sommelier can help you choose the right piece for you. There is also wagyu, lobster burger, and spatchcock on the menu. Simply select your sides and sauces, then enjoy. Don't forget to glance over the wine list.

Where to stay

There is no better place than the Abu Dhabi EDITION Hotel when it comes to accommodation. A vision of Ian Schrager's iconic hotel collection, this luxury hotel sits waterfront in Abu Dhabi — on the Al Bateen Wharf.

The hotel is mere steps away from the city's most popular attractions and is in the heart of the bustling city nightlife. Although with three signature restaurants, a lobby bar, pool, and three-story social space, there isn't much need to leave the hotel.

Settle into Alba terrace for afternoon tea, or soak up a sunset at the Annex, serving Peruvian-inspired fare. The Library Bar is an excellent place for a gin or cocktail pre-dinner. Last but not least, the Market at EDITION is open for breakfast and lunch, serving international cuisines in a relaxed, casual space.

The pool is also a great place to relax and enjoy marina skyline views. There's a menu of delicious light bites and cocktails to cement your vacation vibes.
