Where to Visit for a Thoughtful Australia Day 2025

For some Australians, 26 January is a time to gather family, head to the beach and fire up the barbie. For others, it's a time of mourning as the country grapples with its colonial past and seeks to build a more inclusive future. Australia Day is the annual holiday that marks Captain Arthur Phillip’s arrival in New South Wales in 1788, where he founded the first permanent colony on the continent.

Originally dreamed up in the 19th-century to encourage patriotism among white settlers in Australia’s farthest reaches, today it’s often seen as an opportunity to honour First Nation people’s resilience too. Here’s how to celebrate thoughtfully in and around the country’s five major cities.

Sydney

The nation’s birthplace brims with waterfront events, including the iconic Ferrython on Sydney Harbour. For an indigenous peoples’ perspective, Barangaroo Reserve hosts the WugulOra Morning Ceremony, where First Nations’ voices share stories through dance and song. The Sofitel Sydney is well situated to watch the waterfront fireworks display.

The city sings with family-friendly events at South Bank Parklands including live music and food stalls, while the city’s cultural showcase on the banks of the river provides an opportunity to engage with ancient traditions. W Brisbane boasts excellent river views.

Adelaide

Elder Park hosts community celebrations with local food, music and cultural displays, while the annual Multicultural Youth Music and Culture Festival is a showcase of the best First Nations’ and Multicultural talent.

Perth

Langley Park features parades and fireworks, but for a deeper connection, visit the Birak Concert in Supreme Court Gardens, celebrating Noongar culture through traditional music, dance and food. Head to Ritz Carlton’s roof bar to cool down after a day’s exploring.
