Top Destinations for Wildlife Photography

As the name suggests, Darwin Day is a celebration of naturalist Charles Darwin – famed for his discoveries on natural selection. Each year on February 12, Darwin’s work is celebrated through events immersed in nature. Photography has become a huge element of keeping the Darwin legacy alive, offering vital documentation of our world and the species within it. Our editors have selected must-visit destinations around the world for your next photographic adventure.

Banff, Canada

Whether you decide to wander around the city centre – where deer and elk have been known to join the daily commute – or the UNESCO Heritage-listed national park, Banff offers a variety of landscapes and wildlife for you to explore.

Nicknamed the “Castle in the Rockies”, Fairmont Banff Springs is right in the heart of Banff’s National Park. Choose from more than 750 accommodation options alongside multiple restaurants and bars, access to skiing facilities, and a 27-hole golf course (open during summer months).

Patagonia, South America

Patagonia is a mountainous region that stretches from Chile to Argentina across the southernmost region of South America with fjords, lakes, and glaciers in the east, and barren deserts to the west. Book a whale-watching boat trip or head to Chile’s Torres del Paine national park for sightings of guanacos, condors and pumas, if you’re lucky.

The Singular Patagonia is a museum-hotel housed in the old Puerto Bories Cold Storage Plant. The site – once the most important cold storage plant in Chilean-Argentinean Patagonia – was declared a National Heritage in 1996 and is a relic of the region’s industrial past. Wake up to undisturbed views of the Señoret Channel before embarking on a parkland hike.

Java, Indonesia

From orangutans, leopards and panthers, to lizards, birds and weevils, an array of native species roams this island. Threats of deforestation have endangered much of the wildlife population so we suggest visiting an eco-conscious property such as Amanjiwo, which works with neighbouring communities to support conservation efforts. The hotel overlooks UNESCO World Heritage Site Borobudur – the largest temple in the world – and is surrounded by a stunning nature reserve. Take your camera along on a guided jungle trek but be mindful of the monkeys, who are known to have kleptomaniac tendencies.

IJEN VOLCANO IN JAVA, INDONESIA

Maasai Mara, Kenya

This area of preserved savannah wilderness in Kenya is teeming with photo opportunities. Traversing the plains are all the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and buffalo, plus zebra, hippo, giraffe and wildebeest. Book a stay at Fairmont Mara Safari Club, a five-star hotel with 38 tented rooms, a spa, and exclusive experiences such as game drives and visits to Maasai Villages.
