Three Places for Pastel de Nata in Porto, Portugal

Three Places for Pastel de Nata in Porto, Portugal

There are numerous reasons to visit Portugal, but none are quite as globally revered as the iconic pastel de nata. Porto offers a range of eateries that serve these traditional sweet goods, but finding the best spot is as challenging as Porto’s steep hills. Our editors have listed their favourite places below.

Manteigaria

Manteigaria's baked goods are so popular that within just 10 years of opening, they have expanded to multiple destinations across Europe. The business was originally housed in a 19th century butter factory in Chiado called 'Manteigaria União' and as butter is such a formative element of the custard pastries, this became the company’s namesake.

You will find two branches of the Manteigaria bakeries in Porto: one in Bolhão and another in Clérigos. Within each store, you will find trays of freshly baked pastel de nata paired with steaming pots of coffee. Both branches are perfectly placed to explore the city, so listen out for the bell ring of each completed batch of pastries and grab one before your next sightseeing adventure.

Castro

This is another iconic spot that sees flocks of eager pastry lovers swarm through its doors on a daily basis. Castro is a more formal atelier that nods to the old-school patisserie traditions, with pastry chefs adorned in monogrammed white uniforms and boxes encasing the beautifully presented custard pies. The business is located on the corner of R. de Mouzinho da Silveira and Largo Sao Domingos, a vibrant area of the city close to sights such as Palácio da Bolsa. We recommend taking a seat to enjoy your pastel de nata in the store’s elegant interiors, before heading to the riverside for a glass of port.

A TRAY OF PIPING-HOT PASTELS

Confeitaria do Bolhão

When this historic bakery opened its doors in 1896, pastries were a delicacy reserved for the upper classes, usually prior to a shopping excursion in the nearby markets. Confeitaria do Bolhão was one of few places to enjoy these baked goods in the city and while the range of clientele has fortunately since expanded, the shop itself stands as a relic of Portuguese history and culture. We recommend getting here early to avoid the queues, which have been known to trail down the street.

Pair your gastronomy adventures with a stay in the Intercontinental Porto, a former monastery-turned-luxury hotel offering five-star facilities in the heart of the city. After a day of eating and sightseeing, we recommend heading to the onsite spa for an indulgent treatment before relaxing in the elegant bar area. When booking via ASMALLWORLD Collection, you will receive VIP benefits such as room upgrades, hotel credit and more at no extra cost for all of our hotels.
