The ASMALLWORLD Travel Wishlist

As 2024 comes to an end, you will no doubt be dreaming up your New Year travel wish list. From ancient ruins to sun-soaked coasts, our editors have selected some of the most diverse destinations to inspire your next adventure.

Muscat, Oman

Oman’s stunning capital city is certainly one to watch. Overlooked by rugged mountains and fringed by the Arabian Sea, Muscat is a haven for those who crave both culture and relaxation. Wander through the atmospheric Muttrah Souq, an ancient marketplace which dates back 200 hundred years, marvel at the grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque, which boasts one of the largest domes in the world, or embark on an idyllic dhow cruise at sunset. This is a beautiful city steeped in history – and one that we hope to see much more of in the coming year.

Nikko, Japan

Nikko is a mountainous town in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, just a two-hour drive from Tokyo. Home to UNESCO-listed shrines and temples, not to mention an array of wellness facilities, this small yet vibrant community offers a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual and cultural history. We recommend paying a visit to Toshogu Shrine (which enshrines the most renowned samurai leader, Tokugawa Ieyasu), before soaking in one of the many onsen (natural hot springs) or embarking on a hike through the lush forests of Nikko National Park.

California, USA

It may be renowned for its star-studded southern coast, but you can’t escape California’s world-leading vineyards. The state has a reputable position within the food and wine industry. We recommend beginning with the rolling hills of Napa Valley before embarking on a road trip along Big Sur’s rugged coastline. Outdoors enthusiasts will love the parks – Yosemite, Sierra and Joshua Tree are amongst the favourites – while the avant-garde arts scene in San Francisco and rural charm of Sacramento are a must-visit. For a touch Hollywood glitz and glamour, Los Angeles and the laid-back mid-century modernism of Palm Springs are truly a sight to behold.

Herceg Novi, Montenegro

With its combination of Mediterranean allure, outstanding natural beauty and proximity to equally highly rated countries such as Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro is set to become Europe’s next luxury hotspot. Explore the cobblestone stairways and squares of charming Herceg Novi, before diving into the turquoise waters of the Bay of Kotor or setting sail to the picturesque Blue Caves. There’s plenty to do here for history buffs, outdoors enthusiasts, and beachside bathers, making it the perfect destination for every type of traveller.
