Taiwan’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival

Taiwan’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival

On the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar is Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, an event that celebrates light triumphing over darkness. This year the three-day event will take place between February 8-12 in Pingxi, a rural district of New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Learn about Lunar traditions

The annual lunar lantern festival is a significant cultural event both in Pingxi, Taiwan, and across Asia. It marks the launch of a new lunar year and the start of the spring equinox, when days become longer and the nights shorter. Multiple lantern festivals are held both regionally and nationally throughout the month of February in Taiwan, China, Myanmar, Vietnam and beyond, and are significant highlights in the calendar year. While Pingxi is renowned for its beautiful lantern displays, you may also want to stay for the national Taiwan Lantern Festival, from February 12-23.

Explore Pingxi

While Pingxi is renowned for its lantern displays, there are lots of other things to do in the area. Admire the stunning architecture, with shops and residential buildings dating back to the Japanese occupation period. Carved into the hillside is the market area, Pingxi Old Street, with a train track weaving through the bustling streets. Taipei is just a 30-40 minute drive away and 10 minutes away is Shifen, another scenic old town and the location of the Shifen Waterfalls.

Taste Yuanxiao

These glutinous rice balls are a lantern festival custom. Traditionally served as a dessert dish in warm, sugared water, the sweet dumplings are typically filled with black sesame seeds or peanut paste. The round shape of the dumplings symbolises unity and completeness – both of which act as positive omens for the coming year. Enjoy a bowl of yuanxiao in Pingxi or central Taipei, where there are plenty of restaurants and eateries serving the wholesome dish.

Admire the illuminated lanterns

Of course, the annual Sky Lantern Festival holds significance both in symbolism and in scenery. The sight of dozens of paper lanterns filling the night sky is truly one to behold, whether or not you decide to join in with the festivities or observe from afar. As tradition goes, you write your wishes for the coming year on your lantern before setting it free, allowing your wishes to be carried by the winds of fate.
