Revelry and Ruffles: Discover Rio Carnival

Revelry and Ruffles: Discover Rio Carnival

Each year, more than two million people flood the streets of Rio de Janeiro to immerse themselves in the unrivalled jamboree of Carnival. A vibrant explosion of colour and life, the city rejoices with feathered costumes, surreal floats and the pulsing beats of samba.

The Origins of Carnival

Held in the week leading up to Lent, Carnival will take place from February 28th to March 5th this year. With roots in centuries-old tradition, Rio Carnival is a celebration of indulgence before the solemnity of Lent; the word ‘carnival’, deriving from Latin, literally means “farewell to meat”.

Introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the festival originally mirrored Parisian masquerade balls. Over time it evolved and stands as a symbol of the rich tapestry of Brazil, shaped by local and Portuguese customs and, most significantly, African heritage which incorporated rhythmic drumming, exuberant dances and elaborate costumes.

FLAMBOYANT FLOATS IN THE SAMBADROME

Royal Spectacle, Samba and Street Parties

The revelry officially begins with the coronation of King Momo, a jovial figure chosen by a jury to “rule” over the city during Carnival. Standing beside him is the Carnival Queen, an embodiment of grace and energy, she is selected for her exceptional samba skills and flanked by two Princesas, the runners-up in the competition for the crown.

At the heart of Carnival, and indeed Brazilian national identity, is samba, a dance characterised by its infectious percussion and sensuous movement. Samba schools, passionate community-based groups, compete in a fierce display of dance and pageantry. Each school chooses a theme, with elaborate floats and meticulously choreographed routines relaying traditional stories.

While the grand parades of the Sambadrome captivate audiences worldwide, the soul of Carnival lies in its street parties, and blocos. With more than 500 blocos taking place across Rio, there’s a party for every taste and these gatherings see revellers dancing in the streets to the beats of samba, funk and axé.

The hotel’s guest book is unashamedly star-studded, boasting the signatures of Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana and Robert De Niro among others. With the city’s largest swimming pool, a luxurious spa and not one, but two Michelin-starred restaurants, it is the perfect sanctuary to retreat to after celebrating Carnival.
