March’s Art Calendar

March’s Art Calendar

From diasporic photography in Hong Kong to multigenerational retrospectives in Amsterdam, art aficionados have plenty to look forward to in March. Our editors have selected the best events to see over the next month.

Art Fair Tokyo

Tokyo International Forum, 3 Chome-5-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 100-0005

Standing at the vanguard of Asia’s art market, Art Fair Tokyo will return for its 19th edition from 7-9th March. An annual event for established and emerging artists alike, the fair is an epicentre for global and local art dealers and curators. Presenting groundbreaking perspectives across multiple mediums, expect to see anything from nihonga painting, seto-ware ceramics and modern art installations.

Look out for some exceptional new artwork by Japanese artist Keitoku Toizumi who experiments with strikingly sculptural forms in his hyper-realistic paintings. We recommend staying at Mesm Tokyo because of its proximity to the fair and stunning waterfront location.

Anselm Kiefer: Where Have All the Flowers Gone Amsterdam

Van Gogh Museum, Museumplein 6, 1071 DJ Amsterdam and Stedelijk Museum, Museumplein 10, 1071 DJ Amsterdam

An exclusive collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum presents a major exhibition exploring the art of Anselm Kiefer. This fascinating dialogue between past and present pairs iconic paintings by Van Gogh with works by Kiefer, highlighting how the latter has been inspired by the former. Like a metaphorical diptych, the exhibition is divided into two parts, but visitors can experience both with a single ticket. The show opens on March 7th.

The Other Art Fair, London

The Truman Brewery, Dray Walk, London E1 6QL

A beer brewery turned creative hub, The Truman Brewery in East London is hosting The Other Art Fair from 6-9th March. Differing from more established art fairs, The Other Art Fair champions young and emerging artists who aren’t always represented by a commercial gallery. Providing a platform to exceptional young talent is increasingly important in an age when arts funding is dwindling. After a day immersed in avant-garde art, performances and DJs, relax in one of the iconic Eames chairs at the Andaz Liverpool Street, a grand Victorian building with superb transport links.

Art Basel Hong Kong

Hong Kong Convention Centre, 1號 Expo Dr, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

As the most prestigious art fair in Hong Kong, Art Basel is taking a new direction by inviting the contemporary art centre Para Site to curate its new film programme. The fair’s ‘Insight’ category will showcase photography in Asia spanning from the 1970s to the present day, featuring work by Asian artists.  We recommend staying at the Four Seasons Hong Kong, where you can indulge in world-class dining at two Michelin-starred restaurants, each with three stars—an ideal way to unwind after a day immersed in art.

Black Paris

The Centre Pompidou, Place Georges-Pompidou, 75004 Paris

This exhibition opening at the Centre Pompidou on 19th March highlights the impact of Black artists in France from the 1950s to 2000, featuring 150 artists of African descent—many of whom are being exhibited in the country for the first time. The show delves into Paris as a centre of artistic expression and resistance, showcasing movements from surrealism to Afro-Atlantic abstraction and their role in shaping modern and postmodern art. After visiting, we suggest you unwind at the Cheval Blanc, a luxury hotel overlooking the Seine and a short walk from the Louvre if you fancy continuing your cultural education.
