London Shows to See in December

London is renowned for its arts scene, with the West End leading the way for theatre innovation. Tourists and locals alike visit the UK capital to watch a mixture of cutting-edge originals and timeless classics. December is a popular month for theatre in the city, so we recommend booking in advance to avoid missing out.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Sadler’s Wells (3rd December 2024 – 26th January 2025)

For a festive experience, we recommend going to see Matthew Bourne’s production of ‘Swan Lake’. The director and choreographer is renowned for his reimagined ballet productions and this visceral rendition of Tchaikovsky’s classic has toured stages across the globe since its origins in 1995. With its groundbreaking choreography and striking visuals in the iconic venue of Sadler’s Wells, this show is well worth every penny.

Waiting for Godot, Theatre Royal Haymarket (until 21st December 2024)

Director James Macdonald’s take on this Samuel Beckett masterpiece, known for its existential humour and reflections on human nature, has received four and five-star reviews across the board. Beckett’s often puzzling world is accessible and engaging in this production, made all the better with fantastic performances from Ben Wishaw and Lucian Msamati. Tickets are running out fast, so be sure to grab yours while they’re still available.

The Lehman Trilogy, Gillian Lynne Theatre (until 5th January 2025)

For the film and history buffs, ‘The Lehman Trilogy’ is another highly rated watch. This Tony-award-winning production has been directed by none other than Sam Mendes, who amongst stage productions has also directed a roster of famous films, including ‘1917’, ‘American Beauty’, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Sceptre’. Mendes has brought to life this tale of Wall Street icons the Lehman brothers through a mesmerising three-part show, reflecting the same artistic vision that he brings to his film direction. It’s informative, visually captivating and surprisingly entertaining – a great choice for those interested in both history and storytelling.
