Kerry is famed for its rolling green hills, dairy farms and traditional folk music, as well as a thriving arts scene. From here you can easily reach other areas of coastal Ireland by way of the Ring of Kerry, a 112-mile route that hugs the rugged Iveragh Peninsula, featuring breathtaking Atlantic views, hillsides dotted with cattle and the UNESCO-listed Island Monastery of Sceilg Mhichíl (Skellig Michael).

While it might appear to be a quaint Irish county steeped in tradition, Kerry remains at the forefront of contemporary politics, art and culture. At the tip of Northern Ireland is the Giant’s Causeway, a natural phenomenon – and Ireland’s second UNESCO-listed site – consisting of a series of hexagonal columns. While Gaelic legend suggests that they were placed here by an ancient warrior prior to battle, other sources suggest that the site was formed following a volcanic eruption some fifty to sixty thousand years ago.

Giant’s Causeway is in County Antrim, where you will also find the rugged Antrim Coast and Glens National Landscape. Just a short drive away is Northern Ireland’s capital city, Belfast, and Londonderry (or Derry), a city worth exploring due to its position during the Troubles and the fact that it remains a fully intact walled city – the only one in Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland’s capital offers a blend of literary influences, Georgian and Victorian architecture, leading universities – and of course, Guinness. Read literary masterpieces by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce and more in the Old Library (featuring the Book of Kells), explore the 13th-century Dublin Castle, or have your face etched onto a pint at the original Guinness Storehouse. There are also plenty of notable art institutions such as the National Gallery of Ireland and Irish Museum of Modern Art. This is a fantastic city to explore with friends or family in tow, since there is something to do for every age.
