Global Winter Recipes

The winter season means a whole new roster of global rituals and recipes. From Venezuelan cachapas to Greek kourambiethes, our editors have selected some of their favourite traditional dishes from across the globe.

Mince pies, UK

This British classic involves filling small pastries with a sweet mixture of dried fruits and spices. While historically they were often filled with minced meat, modern versions stick to the vegetarian version. These bite-sized pies are eaten by the dozen across the UK, being the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea or glass of port – delicious!

Cachapas, Venezuela

These corn pancakes are easy to make and are often stuffed with gooey cheese, shredded pork or a combination of sweet and savoury ingredients. Try making them as a sweet treat at home or get the whole family involved for a hands-on festive experience from Latin America.

Pho, Vietnam

As the temperatures drop, there’s no better way to warm up than with a steaming bowl of pho, Vietnam’s beloved noodle soup. Traditionally, the broth is simmered for hours with beef or chicken bones, creating its signature depth of flavour. Featuring a fragrant broth, rice noodles and fresh herbs, it’s a light yet incredibly satisfying dish. Whether enjoyed on the bustling streets of Hanoi or recreated at home, pho is a comforting staple that brings people together, one bowl at a time.

Kourambiethes and Melomacarones, Greece

These shortbread cookies, coated in powdered sugar, resemble freshly fallen snow. A plate of buttery kourambiethes is often served at Greek Christmas gatherings, paired with coffee or a sweet wine. Melomacarones, on the other hand, are soft, spiced cookies soaked in honey syrup and sprinkled with walnuts, offering a rich and indulgent taste of Greek holiday tradition – yummy!

Roast turkey, US/UK

For the USA and UK, no holiday feast list would be complete without the centrepiece of a golden roast turkey. Complete the hearty festive feast with cranberry sauce, stuffing and roast potatoes – Brussels sprouts optional.

Mulled Wine, Central and Northern Europe

Mulled wine, or Glühwein, is a traditional warm spiced drink originating in Central and Northern Europe, particularly Germany and Austria, where it is a festive market staple. It’s made by heating red wine with a blend of spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, often with orange slices for added flavour. Variations of this cosy beverage are enjoyed across Europe during the holiday season, from Sweden’s glögg to the UK’s spiced version served at Christmas markets.
