Festive Film Locations Across the Globe

Festive Film Locations Across the Globe

Ready to rewatch your favourite holiday movies? Take it one step further by visiting the most beloved movie sites in person. Our editors have rounded up their favourite festive film locations across the globe.

New York City, USA

Few cities go all-out like New York at Christmas, which is evident in the numerous holiday films that have been shot here. Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone 2, Elf and Scrooged, amongst others, highlight the sheer magic of NYC’s festive displays. Retrace Kevin's steps around Rockefeller Center, Central Park and the FAO Schwarz toy store, surrounded by twinkling lights and holiday décor. Follow the holiday parade route down Fifth Avenue (as seen in Miracle on 34th Street) or make your way up to the top of the Empire State Building, hopefully minus a run in with the security guards as seen in Elf. New York is a magical place to visit in December, with festive shows and events scattered across the city.

THE FAMOUS ROCKEFELLER CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE

Vermont, USA

For a literal take on a white Christmas, head to this snow-covered US state – the setting of the 1950s musical classic, A White Christmas. While Pine Tree was a fake town of the filmmaker’s creation, there are plenty of communities across the region upon which the fictitious location was modelled. Wooden cabins and steaming pots of fondu are the theme here, set against maple tree-scattered hillsides covered with thick blankets of snow.

London, UK

For a dose of quintessential British festivities, head to central London. A number of Richard Curtis’s most beloved rom-coms were set here, including the festive favourite, Love Actually. Head to Selfridges for a spot of Christmas shopping, albeit without Rowan Atkinson’s trademark packaging, before admiring the Christmas lights on Regent’s Street and themed decorations of Carnaby Street. From here, we recommend heading to the Southbank to enjoy a scenic walk along the river (Dido song optional). Wandsworth – the “dodgy end” – could also be on your list, although we can’t guarantee that the area is easy to navigate without a singing chauffeur.

FESTIVE LIGHTS IN LONDON

Surrey, UK

For an extra dose of Christmas charm, we also recommend embarking on a day trip to Surrey, where you can explore the quaint villages and setting of The Holiday. Kate Winslet’s cosy cottage is based in Holmbury St Mary, a beautiful village set amidst the rolling Surrey Hills – one of 46 places across the UK that have been officially titled an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surrey is just a short train ride from London, with most routes lasting between 30-45 minutes.

Salzburg, Austria

While not exactly a Christmas film, The Sound of Music is a family favourite during the holiday season. Salzburg is a charming little town nestled amongst the snow-capped Alpes, with heavy snowfall, Alpine influences and a beautiful Christmas market making it the perfect spot for your winter adventures. Head to Mirabell Palace, stroll around the cobbled streets, or embark on a hike across the surrounding hillside, where you’ll feel like the von Trapp family could appear any second.
