Around an hour north of Dubai lies the upcoming Emirate state of Ras Al Khaimah. If you’ve experienced Dubai and seek a quieter, more authentic Arabian vibe, this is the place to be. With low-key luxury resorts, rich history, beautiful beaches and outdoor activities ranging from Bedouin adventures to golfing and water skiing, this is one Emirate state you won't want to leave. Here are a few ideas for things to do in Ras Al Khaimah to tempt your adventurous spirit.

Envelop Yourself in Nature

Unlike neighbouring Dubai, there are still plenty of natural spaces in Ras Al Khaimah, and one of these places is Al Wadi Nature Reserve. The 1,235-acre area in the Wadi Khadija is abundant with wildlife and perfect for anyone wishing to spend time amongst nature. You can discover the Equestrian Centre – home to both horses and camels and enjoy a thrilling ride across desert dunes. Falconry displays take place throughout the day where you can get up-close and personal with hawks, owls and eagles, or you can partake in a spot of fishing in the reserve watering hole. Afterwards, make a stop at nearby Ritz-Carlton Hotel to indulge in a traditional flavoured shisha and signature cocktails at the hotel’s chic rooftop Moon Bar.

Enjoy an Authentic Bedouin Experience

If you’ve always imagined sleeping in a Bedouin tent under clear starry skies, now’s your chance! Experience life in the desert, living inside an igloo tent just like the Emiratis did, sit on cushioned floors sampling delicious Middle Eastern cuisine and enjoy unspoilt, panoramic vistas of golden sand dunes as the sunsets. In addition to embracing an exotic Arabian Nights lifestyle, this fun adventure also includes contemporary additions such as exploring the desert landscape by camel, quad biking or even driving a 4 x 4 across the dunes. Accommodations in the camp are modern, decorated with Bedouin textiles and furnishings, and if you want to go full luxury, the premium tent at Bedouin Oasis Camp even has air-conditioning!

Discover Ras Al Khaimah’s History

Set beneath a spectacular Hajar Mountain backdrop, Ras Al Khaimah’s rich heritage spans centuries. Although much of the city is modern in stature, there are pockets of the old fishing village which still exist. Jaziret al-Hamra offers a glimpse into the old ways of the Emirate when fishermen and pearl divers would bring their natural treasure hauls into the harbour. You can discover the city’s history at the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah and even drive, hike or cycle to the country’s highest peak Jebel Jais. The latter is the perfect place for a romantic picnic and photography, especially nearing sunset when the rugged terrain is overridden with a wonderful ochre and orange glow. However, if that all seems a tad energetic, head for Flamingo Beach – a 400-metre-long stretch of golden sand with a smattering of stylish cafes.
